Mystic Museum of Art

Catherine Whall Smith's piece "Transfusion #2" was awarded the Joseph Gaultieri Prize in The 61st Regional All Media Show at the Mystic Museum of Art (MMOA) in Mystic, CT. It hangs August 4th through September 16th.

CWA Exhibition at Arts Center East

The Connecticut Women's Artist (CWA) 2017 87th Annual Open Juried Exhibition show is now hanging at Arts Center East in Vernon, CT. This show includes selected works by CWA members and national artists from MA, NY, NJ, VA, OH, NV, CA, and AZ. The reception will be from 2-4pm on September 10th. Pieces in the show include work by Mary Lachman and Catherine Whall Smith.

Best in Show!

Christina Blais was awarded "Best in Show" for a piece she almost did not enter! Submitting her "Yoga Dog" to the Milford Arts Center PAWS exhibit, she was asked if she had any other animal works. She went home, and returned with "Green Fish" which was awarded a $150 prize for its artistry, great use of color, and fine detail, said juror Tina Summers.

JAM exhibition

The JAM (Journals and More) quilt group from Berlin, CT has a quilt exhibition at the Plainville CT library, 56 East Main Street, Plainville. It is on display from July 1-31 and is open during library hours. Local Color is a dual exhibition presented by SAQA members from the Connecticut region and the Northern California/Nevada region. 

Connecticut, home to a growing number of talented fiber and multi-media artists, has centuries of stories to tell.  “Local Color: Connecticut Stories” is the second Connecticut-themed, juried exhibition organized by co-curators Diane Wright and Kate Themel and brought to life by Connecticut SAQA members. This visually exciting collection embodies the uniqueness of our state’s history and each artist’s personal narrative.

"Water is Life" at the New England Quilt Museum

Joan Blade Johnson, a Hampton resident and fiber artist, will display her art quilt at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts from February 15 - April 29 of this year.  She is one of 40 art quilters chosen to participate in the exhibition “Water is Life: Clean Water and Its Impact on the Lives of Women and Girls around the World,” which will be the featured exhibit at the Museum (http://nequiltmuseum.org/index.html) during this period.

                  Organized by the Rhode Island non-profit Quilt for Change (www.quiltforchange.org) and Rome, Italy-based American Exchange Rome, “Water is Life” highlights the importance of consistent access to clean water in the lives of millions of women around the world and brings attention to the many countries whose populations face a struggle for clean water on a daily basis.  Without clean water, millions of women are deprived of the opportunity to live, safe, healthy lives, to obtain an education, find jobs, care for their families, and contribute to their societies.  Water is Life was organized to help celebrate the United Nations’ annual “World Water Day,” which is commemorated every year March 22  in recognition of the importance of clean water to health, well-being and prosperity, especially for women and children.  Water is Life is the fifth quilt show to be displayed at UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, where diplomats, policy makers and thousands of visitors to the UN’s headquarters are exposed to the messages of concern and support for women’s empowerment embodied in these quilts. According to Allison Wilbur, Executive Director of Quilt for Change, participating quilters are artists who bring their subject matter to life through their talent and compassion. 

                  After its debut in Geneva, which was sponsored by the U.S. diplomatic mission to the United Nations, “Water is Life” traveled to Rome for exhibition at the Scuderie Aldobrandini in Frascati, Italy last September.  Crossing the Atlantic, the quilts were on display in Houston, Texas in November during the Houston International Quilt Festival, which welcomes more than 50,000 visitors.   Once the exhibition at the New England Quilt museum finishes, the quilts will tour at six major quilt shows across the country with the Mancuso Show Quilt Festivals (http://www.quiltfest.com).

Reflections by Clara Nartey

Clara Nartey has a beautiful solo show, "Reflections: Stitched Drawings" at Atticus Bookstore and Cafe, 1082 Chapel Street, in New Haven. The exhibit will be on view through October 23, and on October 22, Clara will be on hand for a meet and greet from 3:00 to 4:00pm.

Dawn Allen's Secret Garden

A solo exhibit highlighting Dawn's fabric art from the past two years, will be at the Rinnova Gallery (105 Elm Street Westfield, MA - only 10 minutes from the CT border!) September through October with the artist's reception on October 7th from 6-8pm. Most of the artwork from the "Larger Than Life Flowers" series will be there as well as several new and not yet exhibited pieces.

The “Larger Than Life Flowers” series is inspired by the moment in the Wizard of Oz when the movie turns to color and the camera pans across giant colorful flowers. This series is fun, exciting, and happy. These original art pieces hang on the wall and bring cheer to your space.

All of the pieces are made from fabric using modern art quilting techniques and her own method of transforming the usually flat quilt medium into three dimensional art.

Sisters in Cloth exhibition

Some of our SAQA-CT members will be exhibiting at The Valentine H. Zahn Community Gallery at the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center. The exhibit runs from September 8 through October 28, 2016 with an opening reception on Thursday, September 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Gallery is located at 250 Flat Rock Place, Westbrook. Monson Arts Council Fiber Arts Show

Monson Arts Council is planning a Fiber Arts Show for Fall! They are seeking artists working with Felt, Quilting and Weaving to enter an open show — Celebrate Fiber Arts — which will be held in four venues on Main Street in Monson MA, September 30, October 1 & 2, 2016.

They are hoping to reach artists who want to show their work in a festive event and who will also have the opportunity to sell their work - all entrants may be in our sales shop. The entry deadline is September 10. The entry form and more details are available on the Monson Arts Council website.

21st Annual Quilt and Needle Arts Show

First Church of East Haddam is proud to present its 21st Annual Quilt and Needle Arts Show, located in America's Oldest Federal Meetinghouse. When decorated with vibrant quilts and needlework, it is transformed into a spectacular showcase and an inspiration to those of us who appreciate fine handwork. We hope you will be part of this experience! We invite you to share your love of needlework by exhibiting your quilts, cross-stitch, needlepoint, hooked rugs, knitting, crocheting, etc.

Show hours will be 10:00am - 5:00pm on Saturday October 8th and 1:00pm- 5:00pm on Sunday October 9th. Exhibitors should fill out the attached application (click to enlarge)

and mail it before SEPTEMBER 26 to H. Coleman, 140 Sillimanville Rd, Moodus CT 06469. Admission to the show is $7.00 per person, but exhibitors are admitted free of charge.

Submissions are due at the church on Friday, Oct 7th, between 10:00am and 6:00pm and can be picked up immediately after the show (between 5:00 and 7:00pm) on Sunday, Oct 9th. If your submission is for sale, please indicate your asking price on the application form. First Church reserves the right to collect a 20% commission for handling the sale.

Please be assured that your submission will be cared for by members of First Church. (Volunteers will be sleeping in the church on Friday and Sturday nights just to keep an eye on everything!)

Let Them Eat Cake!

Congratulations to Angelina Kendra for her quilt, "Let Them Eat Cake", making the front page of the Hartford Courant's Living section! It will be part of the exhibit, "SAMESEX" at the City Lights Gallery. The opening reception, as well as a pride walk, will be held Thursday, July 21, at the gallery located at 855 Main St. in Bridgeport, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The parade starts at 7:30. The exhibit will run until Aug. 30. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday and Friday 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday noon to 4 p.m.
