“TEXTile” A special exhibition of Fiber Art at the Guilford Free Library

Opening Reception Thursday, December 9th 2010 from 5 – 8 PM

The Sisters in Cloth’s latest exhibit is on display now through December 30, 2010.

TEXTile is the result of a group challenge posed to all members and former members: create an art quilt inspired by the word "WORD".  Meant to be translated very broadly, the basic requirement was that a word or text had to be contained somewhere within the piece.

Ten current members and two past members have contributed work: Barb Adams, Debbie Bento, Vivika DeNegre, Yvette Howard, Evelyn Judson, Gail Kotowski, Carol Ludington, Ruth Anne Olson, Marie Shepherd, Martha Wolfe, Diane Wright and Linda Zimmerman.

Call for Submissions

Bowls: common, open-top containers, dishes or basins, often round and rather deep, used in many cultures chiefly for holding liquids and food.

One of the simplest, most ancient, and most elemental forms, bowls have been created and recreated by artists and artisans through the ages as objects variously or simultaneously functional, sculptural, decorative, utilitarian, and more.

This exhibit will explore what continues to be new and vital about this form, and submitted work is encouraged to explore its many aspects.

Jurors: Pam Erickson and Richard Davis

Eligibility: This exhibition is open to bowls in any media, including mixed media. All submitted work must be three dimensional.  Open to all U.S. residents.

Awards: $500 in prizes to be awarded by the jurors.

Entries: Each artist may submit up to three (3) works. Each work may be represented by two separate images: one full view and one detail view. Work must be submitted in high resolution digital format. For each entry please note: Title; Media; Size/Dimensions; Retail price or not for sale/insurance value.

Entry Fee: $25.00. Includes up to three (3) submissions. Make check payable to Guilford Art Center and mail to 411 Church Street, Guilford, CT 06437. Or call the Center with credit card number (203-453-5947). Payment must be received for entries to be eligible.

Entry Deadline: January 31. Digital images and entry fee must be received by this date.

Owen Sea Luckey is a Branford textile artist who pushes the boundaries of knitting and sewing with her whimsical holes, sumptuous textures and embellishments on scarves and recycled garments.

Artist Laura Lyons raises sheep on her farm in Madison, Connecticut. After her sheep are sheared, she washes, picks, cards, dyes and spins the wool. From this wool she creates unique and irresistible needle felted animals and wall pieces.

Kristin Merrill is a Branford artist who likes to create pieces from natural materials from the sea and land, with sterling, semi precious stone and pearl jewelry and wood and mixed media sculpture.

Theme:  This is a Quilt!

How do we as SAQA members explain what we do - create quilts - without people immediately thinking of a nine-patch that goes on your bed? By example, of course! SAQA defines an art quilt as "a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends."

This definition is purposely broad to accommodate the wondrous and exciting art quilts SAQA members are creating.

Create one piece that constitutes an art quilt as defined above. All work will be
photographed, matted, and prepared for exhibition by SAQA. The SAQA
exhibition committee hopes to publish some or all of the quilts in a book
exploring the diversity of art quilts. All quilts will be returned to the artist after the
travel schedule has ended.

Minimum 9" per side, maximum 11" per side. The pieces will be matted behind
a 12" white or off-white mat with an 8" square opening in the center. Only 8" sq.
of your quilt will be visible. Because the artwork will be behind a mat, the edges
need not be finished. A very small number of three-dimensional pieces may be
included. Please contact the curators for details.

You Are Invited: SAQA-CT Regional Meeting Feb 12th 2011, Open to All

SAQA-CT would like to invite you to an Open Regional Meeting. 

We will gather at the Windsor Art Center (WAC) in Windsor, CT on Saturday February 12, 2011 at 10 AM.   SAQA Members from all over New England, New York and New Jersey as well as members of the public are welcome to attend.

This meeting will coincide with the “Identity in Fiber” Exhibition, which runs from January 22 – March 5, 2011 at WAC. 

We will be meeting during the Windsor Art Center’s normal business hours, so members of the public will be walking though and are welcome to participate.  People may ask questions or just listen & see what we’re about. 

Fiber Artists: Please feel free to bring something to work on while you sit.  Knitting, hand quilting, embroidery… anything that can be done neatly & quietly and does not require special equipment or set up.

The meeting will include our usual “Show & Tell”, a gallery talk with “Identity in Fiber” participating artists, and a boxed lunch.

Artists Announced for “SAQA: Beyond Comfort”

SAQA has announced their final list of artists and titles for the “Beyond Comfort” Exhibition.

This exhibit challenges each artist to venture into uncharted territories of creative expression by turning away from the comfort zones of their established body of work. It provides a "permission slip" to experiment fearlessly with radically new conceptual and narrative agendas; to employ techniques, technologies, or materials. The artistic goal of the exhibition is to encourage reaching beyond comfort to make new and unexpected works of art.

SAQA-CT members Diane Wright and Kate Themel are among the 26 artists who will have work on tour with the exhibition. 

Juror and Editor of Fiberarts Magazine Marci McDade selected 30 quilts from the 209 submitted.  A complete list of artists and titles can be found on SAQA’s website: http://www.saqa.com/hotnews.php?ID=248

The exhibition, curated by Eileen Doughty, will premiere at the Festival of Quilts at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK in August 2011.  The Festival of Quilts (organized with the support of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles) has earned a reputation over the past eight years as the largest, most inspiring quilting event in Europe. 

After its premiere in UK, the “Beyond Comfort” exhibition will be on tour for a year.
