LOCAL COLOR is Moving to Hartford July 1st

As we took down the Local Color artwork from the walls at the Haas Library, several University staff members told us they were sad to see the quilts go.  As curators, Diane and I were thrilled to hear such good reviews, and to know SAQA-CT members had made an impact with their artwork.  Some of the positive comments we received:

  • “I looked forward to seeing them each day as I came in to work.  I wish they could stay.”
  • “They really brighten up the place and inspire creativity.”
  • “It has been a wonderful experience for us to see all the different techniques and styles. I didn’t realize how much could be done with textiles.”

Kudos to venue captains Mayann Weinberg and Margaret Phillips, for handling the logistics for Local Color’s display and opening reception at the Haas Library… You should both “take a bow”!

Along with Mayann and Margaret, the take-down team included Barb Adams, Robin Wolek, Gail Kotowski, Ruth Anne Olson, Norma Schlager, Diane Wright, Kate Themel and Diane Cadrain.  With so many volunteers, the work was done quickly and efficiently.

All the artwork was handled with care, during the installation as well as packing up for transport.

New venue captain Diane Cadrain was there to check off the inventory list and take the lead for our next location in Downtown Hartford.

If you missed the show at the Haas Library, your next opportunity to view these beautiful pieces of fiber art will be July 1 – 31 at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, CT.

A digital postcard is included on this blog under the “Exhibition Postcard” tab.  Feel free to copy the postcard and share it with family, friends or groups who may be interested in visiting the show.

Thank you to all our members who contribute to this show’s success!

This quilt-making challenge celebrates one of the most beautiful & important buildings in the world upon the occasion of its 100th Anniversary this year.

  • Quilts must be no larger than 36" X 36"
  • Prizes: Grand Prize is $ 2,000. First prize is a $250 City Quilter gift certificate; second prize is a $100 City Quilter gift certificate. Honorable mentions (9) receive a "City Bundle" of 6 FQ's of other New York-themed fabrics & the Complete Guide to Quilting.
  • Winners & finalists will be exhibited in the New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex & Store at Grand Central Terminal
  • APQ plans to write about the submissions & competition next year
  • 25% or more of the quilt's surface must use one or more of our GCT prints.
  • Submissions must be made by August 21, 2013 to APQ
  • Up to 5 submissions per person/group

An application form that includes all the details on the prizes, rules & conditions can be downloaded via this link.   And this takes you to our Grand Central fabrics.

We provide this link to the GCT website so contestants can learn more details of the history of the Terminal. This Can be inspirational and help you interpret the theme into your creations.
