Local Color Opens at Slater Memorial Museum (Norwich, CT)

SlaterOpening (6)
(Panoramic view of Converse Gallery)

Sunday December 8 was the official opening of the Slater Museum's double-sized fiber art exhibition.  Art quilts from the SAQA CT: Local Color collection were interspersed with quilts from Fiber Revolution: Diversity, curated by CT's own Barbara McKie

The results were beautiful and sometimes surprising.  Visitors who had seen the Local Color show in Danbury or Hartford were treated to a fresh new experience in Norwich.

The Slater Museum has large open spaces allowing people to back up and view the work from a distance. The high ceilings, skylights and white walls played up the color and texture of the fiber art.  Several people commented "These look like different quilts!".

Gallery coordinator Vivian Zoe's carefully considered placement of Fiber Revolution pieces with those from Local Color created a wonderful visual story.

SAQA artists from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York came to the opening reception.

Congratulations to all the artists from SAQA Connecticut and Fiber Revolution! And thank you to everyone who attended the opening reception.

If you missed the opening, don't worry.  There's still time to see this incredible collection of fiber artwork.  The double exhibition will be on display at the Slater Memorial Museum Converse Gallery until January 14, 2014.  Don't miss it!

Norma Schlager Wins 3rd Place at World of Beauty, 2013 Int'l Quilt Festival (Houston, TX)

SchlagerPlanet

International Quilt Festival, Houston TX
Oct 31 – Nov 3, 2013

Congratulations to SAQA artists Norma Schlager of Connecticut and Kathleen Loomis of Kentucky, who created the prize winning quilt "Brown Planet a Collaboration".

Loomis started "Brown Planet" in 2005, but she hit a creative wall and never quite resolved it.  In 2011, she sent the fabric pieces to Norma Schlager.  Norma picked up where Kathy left off, and brought the work to its beautiful finished form (see image, above).

Brown Planet a Collaboration won 3rd Place in the category ART: Abstract Large, sponsored by Hoffman California/ International Fabrics.  Schlager was there to accept the award in person.
