Artists Announced for “SAQA: Beyond Comfort”

SAQA has announced their final list of artists and titles for the “Beyond Comfort” Exhibition.

SAQA-21yearsThis exhibit challenges each artist to venture into uncharted territories of creative expression by turning away from the comfort zones of their established body of work. It provides a "permission slip" to experiment fearlessly with radically new conceptual and narrative agendas; to employ techniques, technologies, or materials. The artistic goal of the exhibition is to encourage reaching beyond comfort to make new and unexpected works of art.

SAQA-CT members Diane Wright and Kate Themel are among the 26 artists who will have work on tour with the exhibition.

Juror and Editor of Fiberarts Magazine Marci McDade selected 30 quilts from the 209 submitted.  A complete list of artists and titles can be found on SAQA’s website: http://www.saqa.com/hotnews.php?ID=248

The exhibition, curated by Eileen Doughty, will premiere at the Festival of Quilts at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK in August 2011.  The Festival of Quilts (organized with the support of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles) has earned a reputation over the past eight years as the largest, most inspiring quilting event in Europe.

After its premiere in UK, the “Beyond Comfort” exhibition will be on tour for a year.

The Jury is IN: Artists Selected for “SAQA: No Holds Barred”

NEQMbanner

Norma Schlager and Rosalind Spann will represent Connecticut in SAQA’s "No Holds Barred" Exhibition at the New England Quilt Museum.  The show’s theme: A survey showcasing the breadth and depth of work being created by SAQA artists residing in the six New England states.   The exhibition will run from January 20 – April 9, 2011.

Opening Reception Saturday January 29, 2011 from 1 – 4 PM.

Congratulations to Norma and Rosalind, and to all the artists who entered artwork for this show.  A complete list of all participating artists can be found on the “No Holds Barred” Exhibition blog: http://saqane2011news.blogspot.com/

“A huge thanks to all who participated, supported, encouraged, ran errands, picked up supplies, and stayed up late keeping all who worked tirelessly and were able to make the deadline. There is so much that goes on in the background that folks miss but is not going unsung here today. Again thank you all who went for it. Results…There were 115 quilts entered by fifty two artists. Our artists reside in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

We had a note worthy group of seasoned professionals who participated in the jurying. As the process went from beginning to end of the submissions - numerous times, a harmony of works began to form. While the process was everything I hoped for regrettably all entries could not be juried in.

There are plans being worked out right now to produce a catalogue. Watch for exciting news and the special way we plan to acknowledge all our artists. We are all excited and pleased with the way this exhibit is coming together. We hope that you will be able to attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 29, 2011. Watch for News from the NEQM about all the events that will take place during the exhibit. Come out and see your works in the museum. Come out and support your fellow SAQA members.”
